Tanning uses two basic methods, the chrome tanning and retaining with vegetable liquors. The popularity of chrome tanning results from the speed of tanning and the versatility of the finished skin. This method is relatively cheaper than ‘vegetable tanning’, however, it requires special treatment and care.
  • Splitting – tanned leather has about 4-5 mm and at this stage the hide is split into two hides: the grained hides and one split. The split has much less resistance and flexibility than the grained hide. Therefore to produce leather seats or backrest we do not use the split.
  • Scar correction - Heavily scarred hides must receive correction. All these damages are filled using the leather repair compound and then the hide is passed through a machine with abrasive material to buff away the imperfections. When the grain surface of the leather is in a good condition, it goes through further processes of finishing.
  • Pigmentation, embossing and top coat protection - On corrected grain leather a pigmented finish is applied to give few basic colours. At this point, the hide is considered semi-aniline, aniline dyed with a base coat of color. Because these hides were buffed smooth, the next process is embossing a grain into it. Less quality hides receive more buffing and embossing. This gives the leather its final soft, smooth feel and protection and durability .
